Stratford-upon-Avon

“A heart to love, and in that heart, Courage, to makes love known”

If you’re amorous just like me, you must be thrilled by how romantic (yet sometimes pathetic) Shakespeare wrote most of the scripts of his famous plays. I got the chance to pay a visit to a small city, which is claimed to be the city where he was born and spent his life: Stratford-upon-Avon.

In less than a day, you will have finished your tour around this beautiful city. The famous tourist attraction in the city is the Shakespeare’s House tour, where you can visit several houses and places that are related to the life of Shakespeare. I have to say that the price of the tour is expensive, ranging from £23-£25 per person (for entry to 5 places). If you’re on a tight budget (I was), don’t worry too much. Every corner, every route you take, is admirable. You’ll be excited and have a lot of fun. Plus, you can still go to Shakespeare’s house, his wife’s house, his daughter’s house (and all the places included in the tour) for free if you don’t plan to enter them.

Jump off the train and walk a bit towards the center of the city, you will find many little shops inside peculiar buildings of the Tudor period (timber-framed house). Strolling around the city of Stratford-upon-Avon and chilling inside a little tea place will definitely make your day!

Ps. You’re even luckier when it’s sunny.

I can’t tell much, as for Stratford-upon-Avon, the pictures are worth a thousand word. Here you go!

I love Stratford-upon-Avon, my visit to the town was a lovely escape for a city-girl like me. If i may suggest, do come during spring or summer so you can wear a nice outfit (not wrapped in a jacket) and your pictures will turn out to be more stunning! Oh and i can even imagine how beautiful it will be with all the flowers that bloom during those seasons.

Kingdom of England

If someone talks about queen, palace, prince, princess, duke, duchess, and any other royal-related words, our mind must be heading to one thing : the oldest kingdom that still lasts until today, The Kingdom of England. Pardon my narrow knowledge, before i went to Europe, i didn’t know that Netherlands also has a kingdom. Terribly sorry for that.

Anyway, do you remember that Princess Kate and Prince William hold the title of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? And do you also remember that Prince Charles holds the title of Prince of Wales? I wonder where that came from and i got a chance to ask my local tour guide about that. I will now share the answer with you.

Every first son of the King and Queen will be given the title of Prince of Wales (and his wife will hold the title of Princess of Wales). So later on, when Prince Charles become King Charles, Prince William will also hold the title of Prince of Wales. Prince Harry will never hold that title because, obviously, he’s the second son of the king. About the title of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for Will and Kate, Queen Elizabeth give that title as a marriage gift to them. So, that’s why.

The local tour guide also gave me an additional information. When Lady Di still married to Prince Charles, she held the title of Princess of Wales. But then they divorced and Prince Charles is now married to Camilla Rosemary but she doesn’t hold the title of Princess of Wales. Why so? Because the title Princess of Wales has been strongly attached to the figure of Lady Di and Camilla doesn’t want to upset people in England for taking over that title from Lady Di.

Interesting facts.

Buckingham Palace is very popular, not only for international tourist, but also for local tourist. Every summer, the palace is open for public, at the time when Queen Elizabeth is having a vacation to Windsor Castle (if i’m not mistaken). But too bad, it’s already full-booked when i got there so i couldn’t get inside. The palace has hundreds of rooms, immensely huge indeed. See how many windows are there? Oh, and if you come in the right time, you can enjoy the parade of changing the guard at the palace. Without any doubt, palace or castle hopping is an activity that one should never skip when traveling to the UK.

Innsbruck, Austria

It might be not too popular in our generation but to me the movie of The Sound of Music is one of the best movie ever. Julie Andrews took part as the main actress in this musical movie. If you haven’t watch it, i highly recommend you to watch it (though now it might be quite hard to find a store that sell the DVD). The story of the movie took place in Austria, i don’t know which city. In 2013 i got the chance to visit Austria, to the city of Innsbruck.

The city is surrounded by hills and mountains. It’s green, it’s windy, and it’s quite cold. It’s not a metropolitan city and you won’t see many skyscraper. The environment is just perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful life that God has given to us. Oh, and the buildings. The buildings are beautiful. The architecture is amazing.

One of many things that people should know about Austria is that it’s a home for the famous crystal in the world: Swarovski. Innsbruck not only offers a beautiful scenery, but also an entertaining traditional dance. I watched the dance at night. The dancers wear a traditional clothes of Austria. The dance is quite similar to tap dance, you can hear the rhythm of the shoe. The dancers also clap their hands, turn around, and sing. Most of the songs contain this kind of sound ‘lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo’, they sang it with a shrilly voice. I think the reason why the people shrill is because in the old times, they live in a huge village, where the distance between one house to another is quite far. Therefore, if they want to call someone, they have to shrill. But they have a beautiful voice, so it’s okay to hear them shrilling everyday, to be honest. It’s totally different from the crazy-random-screaming drunk people do.

The performers have their own special way to satisfy the audiences. When we enter the restaurant (where the performance is held), we are asked about where we are coming from. It’s a normal question, i thought, because there were so many tourists watching. But the performers actually prepared something for us, the tourists. At the end of the performance, they sang the national song from each of the audience’s home country: Israel, America, Japan, and so on. For Indonesia, they sang ‘Halo Halo Bandung’. They knew the song, i was amazed! I sang along with them and i love the performance so much! Don’t miss out this performance if you visit Innsbruck one day, promise me 🙂
